I'm an active musician in South London, based in Gipsy Hill (between Dulwich and Crystal Palace). I'm primarily a trumpet/cornet player, and I also play the French horn and piano. I arrange and compose on the side, and occasionally conduct.
My experience centres on the Brass Band and Wind Band traditions, including as a front row cornet in a championship section band. I also regularly play jazz and orchestral concerts, and ad-hoc in smaller ensembles. Growing up, I was lucky to sing in chapel and a capella choirs.
Before starting my career in music, I worked in data science for 10 years, gaining essential skills in analysis, communication, and leadership. These same skills are paramount in music teaching: I start by understanding students' goals and needs, and provide them with clear plans and feedback to help them progress. I love helping players of all levels build their technique, musicality, and confidence with each new challenge.
Of course, music also has immense expressive power, and I coach students to tap into this. It is a privilege to feel the exhilaration and the emotion in great music. As trumpeters, we know this can range from fun (e.g. La Cucaracha) to poignant (The Last Post) and everything in between. Playing it only adds to the experience. And motivates all those hours of practice!
